For professional database modeling tasks, take a look at CoreModel. It was designed for the real-world challenges of creating databases, but it is built on a solid foundation in relational theory. It contains everything needed for data modeling. In addition to modeling, CoreModel contains the industry's first metadata server to support enterprise level work. ( Actually, the only one at this time, but imitations will begin. ) CoreModel uses the CoreReader technology to suck an existing database into a model. It uses the same technology to allow the modeler to create databases from the finished model. The download is only three megabytes. CoreModel was designed to install on an individual's home computer to meet the needs of working alone. It installs with its security sub-system turned off, so the lone modeler can immediately go to work. However, behind its innocent facade is a system that can be deployed on servers as a world-wide modeling system. It can scale up to the enterprise level for massive modeling projects. When run by a professional system administrator, its security sub-system can be turned on and the administrator module can be used to support the needs of numerous modelers working with all brands of database servers. CoreModel is a tool for professionals. If you do not know the difference between a logical and a physical model, it may be beyond your competency level. CoreModel is competitive with enterprise level systems costing tens of thousands of dollars. However, if you are a beginner and want to increase your professional skills, CoreModel with its extensive documentation, can be a superb learning aid. Free. It is offered with the same no-strings-attached license that is used by CoreReader. It can be found on its own web site at http://CoreModel.com/ . |
